“Eric Garner pleaded for his live 11 times before his death. Those words will forever be a rallying cry against police brutality in this country, but it has not healed the wounds…by the lives that were lost to over-policing of Black and brown communities,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO. Justice may not have been served in 2014 and a disciplinary trial may not properly hold Officer Daniel Pantaleo accountable for the senseless death of Eric Garner, so we can only hope that this is a step in the right direction to prosecute any and every officer who uses excessive force against unarmed Black women and men.”
