BALTIMORE—(December 16, 2018) The NAACP President Derrick Johnson issued the following statement regarding Prada’s recent advertisement:
“Although Prada did the right thing by removing this particular product line, their initial choice to display such items is reprehensible and just dumbfounding. Blackface is no laughing matter, and has no place in their window displays or any other place in this country. Since its inception in the early 20th century, the use of blackface has only served as a disrespectful, disgraceful, and degrading depiction of African Americans. So this yet another slap in the face to the Black community that suffered hundreds of years of humiliating and racist imagery at the hands of a country that thought of us as not human but fodder for entertainment. As a global fashion company, this is a serious lapse in judgment and we’re disappointed that egregious actions like this continue to happen.”
