When new members of the U.S. House of Representatives were sworn in upon taking office over 20 years ago, they were only given One Minute to speak and introduce themselves. This poem by Karen Mitchell was what Rep. Elijah Cumming, of Baltimore, who died Wednesday, October 16, chose to use to introduce himself to the U.S House of Representatives.
I only have a minute
60 seconds in it, forced upon me
I did not choose it, but I know that I must use it
And give account if I abuse it, suffer if I lose it
Only a tiny little minute, but eternity is in it.”
-Karen Mitchell
THERE WILL BE FEW AS GREAT AND MAGNANIMOUS
as he was to walk those halls.
We have had a lifetime, so let us use every minute as wisely as he did for most of his life.
REST IN PEACE
