On Tuesday, November 12 the NAACP proudly participated in the Home is Here Rally in Washington, D.C. to uplift the voices of all Dreamers and Immigrants. Members of the NAACP argued to protect DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) immigrants and their families from the Trump administration’s cruel, racist, and xenophobic policies. These young immigrants were promised that the United States would protect them, and now Trump and his allies want to break that promise and put almost a million young people of color—many of whom are black—at risk.
NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson spoke at the rally on the importance of continuing in the fight for justice. “An attack on any community of color is an attack on all communities of color. DACA is not only about the Latinx community, it is about African immigrants as well. It is about Asian immigrants as well. It is about European immigrants as well. It is about America owning it’s promise to us all.”
While the rally was taking place, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case NAACP v Trump, our lawsuit against the Trump administration for its decision to terminate the DACA program.
President Johnson continued on to say “There is no America without immigrants. There is no prosperity without immigration. There is no reality of filling this democratic dream if we don’t allow our Dreamers to fully participate.” In closing President Johnson reminded us all that we cannot win unless we continue to fight.
