Next week, the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to consider H.R. 1, the mis-named “Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.” This legislation is bad policy for low-and middle-income Americans; it will cause great harm to public education; it could mean huge tax increases for families already saddled with exorbitant medical costs; it is mean-spirited towards immigrants and non-citizens; and it is bad economic policy. It represents an opportunity lost in terms of what is needed to help all American families prosper, not just the wealthy few.
