Washington, D.C.— White supremacists, including Nazis and KKK members, are planning to lead a “Unite The Right 2” rally in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Lafayette Square outside of the White House. Whether you choose attend a counter-protest or not, please exercise a heightened sense of awareness and travel in groups this weekend.
There are two counter-protest mobilizations scheduled for Washington, D.C. on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in response to the White Supremist Rally planned to be held in front of the White House:
• Black Lives Matter D.C. will lead “Rise Up And Fight Back,” rally beginning at 12:00 Noon on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at 905 16thStreet, NW Washington, D.C. After the rally, the counter-protesters plan to march to Lafayette Square to the location of the “Unite The Right 2” rally.
• Shut It Down D.C. will lead a “Still Here, Still Strong” rally beginning at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C. This rally will feature speakers, music and art embracing cultural diversity. Shut It Down D.C. is a coalition of community partners, including ThANSWER Coalition, Party for Socialism and Liberation, Justice First (D.C.), LinkUp (D.C.), Justice Center en El Barrio NYC, ONE D.C., Internationalist Students Front-George Washington University, GW Queer Radicals, Philadelphia Liberation Center, GW Progressive Student Union, GW Young Democratic Socialists of America, Students for Justice in Palestine at GWU, CodePink, People Power Action, Stop Police Terror Project D.C.
All mobilizations have the potential to become violent, so be careful, be aware of your surroundings and do not travel alone.
Everyone should maintain a heightened sense of awareness throughout this weekend, as white supremacists will be traveling on metro and driving to and from their rally. Whether you attend a counter-protest rally or not, be careful and aware of your surroundings at all times. This rally has the potential to embolden the actions of racists and xenophobes throughout the Washington, D.C. area, so please be aware and cautious. If you do choose to join any counter-protest mobilizations, please follow these safety guidelines:
• Use the Buddy System. Do not travel alone. Travel in groups. Have a pre-planned meeting spot in the event you are separated.
• Call (202) 660-1422, if you are arrested or witness the arrest of an anti-racist demonstrator or counter-protestor.
• Know your rights and carry your ID on you.
• Document everything this weekend. Take photos, video, and use Instagram, Twitter and Facebook Live to document everything this weekend.
