The NAACP is in San Antonio this Saturday for its 109th convention. The convention serves as a meeting ground for African Americans across the nation to discuss civil rights. The conference’s theme this year is “Defeat hate and Vote.” It’ll include legal education seminars, youth workshops, federal legislative and public policy discussion, a hip-hop summit and diversity career fair.

Each year, thousands of people gather in one city to discuss the pertinent issues affecting the African American community. With its rich history and proud culture, San Antonio is the perfect city to host the 109th NAACP Convention. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People kicks off its national convention on Saturday at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center with a rallying cry: “Defeat Hate — Vote.”

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host a town hall titled, “The State of LGBTQ People of Color in America” on Tuesday, July 17 during their 109th annual convention which is being held in San Antonio from July 14 to 18 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention  Center. The town hall will be moderated by Shijuade  Kadree, the senior director of public policy and advocacy at the New York City Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.

About three months after celebrating their 100-year anniversary, members of the San Antonio branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will finally host a national convention in their hometown. From July 14 to 18, an estimated 10,000 visitors will gather at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center for the 109th NAACP convention. Its motto: “Defeat Hate. Vote.” “There’s still a lot of work to do as far as equality for men and women, minorities, and the LGBTQ community, and we want to make sure people … take away this: We are true to our word that we fight for the rights of every individual when we see them being wronged,” said Oliver Hill, president of the NAACP San Antonio branch.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson says that his organization does not oppose charter schools — even though one of the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights groups continues to find many of the schools’ practices troubling. With charter schools, “people only want to highlight successes and never want to talk about the failures. With the NAACP, we want to eradicate the failures because our future is at stake, particularly African-American children and especially African-American males,” said Johnson, in an interview with POLITICO.

The NAACP is now welcoming guests to its 109th convention in San Antonio. The grand opening was held Saturday morning at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The convention is just ahead of the 2018 midterm elections and has a focus on social injustice and civil rights in the President Trump Era.

The Alamo City is hosting the NAACP Conference for the very first time, and this year the San Antonio Texas NAACP branch turns 100 years old. About 400 organizations will take part in the convention and more than 8,000 observers and delegates are expected to attend the event at the Henry B Gonzalez Center. “She has the superpower to diminish the influence of bullies and boost self-esteem and confidence in her peers, so she actively promotes anti-bullying self-loved,” said TiffanyJ, a mentor at the convention center. She added that she wanted to inspire Act-So students, which will take part in 32 competitions in STEM, humanities, business, and performing, with visual and culinary arts.

NewsOne11-Year-Old Naomi Wadler To Be Honored By NAACP For Anti-Gun Violence Activism
Naomi Wadler—the 11-year-old activist who delivered a poignant speech at the March for Our Lives demonstration in March—will receive a major honor from the NAACP today. Wadler is being recognized by the organization for her efforts to bring attention to the lack of concern for Black women and girls who have lost their lives to gun violence, the organization reported. Dr. Christine Darden—a retired NASA Aerodynamics Engineer whose story was highlighted in Hidden Figures—will also be honored during the brunch.

You might know him from “Scary Movie” and his many TV shows, but actor Anthony Anderson is in town for the NAACP convention to talk about his personal struggle with diabetes. Eyewitness News reporter Jeremy Baker has more.

I’m a type two diabetic, my mother is as well, and so was my father. We lost my father to complications from diabetes,” actor Anthony Anderson said. Unfortunately for his father, he was diagnosed too late. “I was the first person in my family diagnosed with it, and unfortunately, when my father was diagnosed with the disease, he probably had the disease close to 20 years,” Anderson said.

The diagnosis from Anthony Anderson’s physician came as a bit of a surprise to him. “I thought I was healthy, you know,” the 47-year-old actor, comedian and writer said. “And I was healthy until the doctor said, ‘Nope! You have type 2 diabetes.” Known for his work in television and film, Anderson, 47, was in San Antonio at the NAACP national convention Sunday, where he spoke about his journey with the disease, which affects 30.3 million people nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Two months after a joint press conference that signaled a historic new partnership between the NAACP and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the budding collaboration took a practical turn on Sunday night. The two organizations plan to launch a joint education and employment initiative on the East Coast this fall, according to an announcement made at the 109th NAACP Annual Convention by Elder Jack N. Gerard, a General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Public Affairs Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Lima NAACP Chapter announced Sunday afternoon (7/15/18) that they plan to file a class action lawsuit against the City of Lima. In a press conference in front of the city offices, chapter president Ron Fails announced that the NAACP plans to file a class action lawsuit on behalf of at least six former city employees who have allegedly experienced discrimination in the form of racism, nepotism, and intimidation from people in power. Fails says the NAACP wants to make sure that every employee is being treated fairly, regardless of color.

The May summit between top leaders of the LDS Church and the NAACP planted seeds of cooperation that are already bearing fruit. On Sunday night, Mormon general authority Jack N. Gerard announced that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was teaming up with the nation’s oldest civil rights organization on a schooling and jobs push on the East Coast.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the NAACP will work together to launch a new education and employment initiative around the East Coast this fall, according to the Deseret News. Elder Jack N. Gerard, a General Authority Seventy and executive director of the Public Affairs Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced the decision at the 109th NAACP Annual Convention opening mass meeting.

According to confirmed reports, the NAACP has lifted its months-long travel ban against American Airlines on Tuesday. Organization officials said they believe the airline has finally made some significant headway in cutting down on discrimination incidents involving passengers of color.The announcement came via Twitter after the civil rights organization advised American Airlines on diversity and inclusion after implementing the ban over “unsafe” conditions for African-Americans last fall.

On Tuesday (July 17), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced the lifting of its travel advisory against American Airlines.
