The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People kicks off its national convention on Saturday at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center with a rallying cry: “Defeat Hate — Vote.”
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host a town hall titled, “The State of LGBTQ People of Color in America” on Tuesday, July 17 during their 109th annual convention which is being held in San Antonio from July 14 to 18 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The town hall will be moderated by Shijuade Kadree, the senior director of public policy and advocacy at the New York City Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.
About three months after celebrating their 100-year anniversary, members of the San Antonio branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will finally host a national convention in their hometown. From July 14 to 18, an estimated 10,000 visitors will gather at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center for the 109th NAACP convention. Its motto: “Defeat Hate. With charter schools, “people only want to highlight successes and never want to talk about the failures. Voter suppression, access to affordable health care, equal treatment in the criminal justice system and judicial appointments are among the issues affecting African Americans covered at the national NAACP convention in San Antonio this week. Naomi Wadler—the 11-year-old activist who delivered a poignant speech at the March for Our Lives demonstration in March—will receive a major honor from the NAACP today. Wadler is being recognized by the organization for her efforts to bring attention to the lack of concern for Black women and girls who have lost their lives to gun violence, the organization reported. Dr. Christine Darden—a retired NASA Aerodynamics Engineer whose story was highlighted in Hidden Figures—will also be honored during the brunch.
You might know him from “Scary Movie” and his many TV shows, but actor Anthony Anderson is in town for the NAACP convention to talk about his personal struggle with diabetes. Eyewitness News reporter Jeremy Baker has more.
I’m a type two diabetic, my mother is as well, and so was my father. We lost my father to complications from diabetes,” actor Anthony Anderson said. Unfortunately for his father, he was diagnosed too late. “I was the first person in my family diagnosed with it, and unfortunately, when my father was diagnosed with the disease, he probably had the disease close to 20 years,” Anderson said.

You have type 2 diabetes.” Known for his work in television and film, Anderson, 47, was in San Antonio at the NAACP national convention Sunday, where he spoke about his journey with the disease, which affects 30.3 million people nationwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
