Washington, DC (April 15, 2020) — The NAACP issued the following statement regarding the Treasury Department’s announcement that Donald Trump’s name would be printed on stimulus checks sent to millions of Americans impacted by the coronavirus.
“The NAACP condemns this unprecedented and brazenly political action of the Treasury Department. It will delay millions of people from receiving the initial economic relief that is needed during this national crisis. Any postponement of the distribution of funds is shameful; to do so, for this reason, it is appalling. Nearly 17 million people have filed for unemployment in the last three weeks, over half a million confirmed cases of the virus have reached our nation’s soil, and twenty-five thousand people have lost their fight with this virus.
This is only the latest example of this administration’s neglect and incompetence when it comes to appropriate preparation for this pandemic and ensuring that Americans have the testing, treatment, and economic relief they need. This man-made disaster has cost thousands of lives and has set our country back economically to the 2008 recession. While this administration has attributed blame to international medical organizations, governors, political parties, and media outlets, at no point has it accepted real accountability for its historic failures in leadership and execution.”
