It’s Women’s History Month! The NAACP will be sharing letters written by our regional Women In the NAACP (WIN) Coordinators to their younger self. Our first highlight comes from Doris Ann Cabaniss Shipman of Region 5.
Dear Ann,
Knowing you as a strong-willed young girl, with unending potential, I am giving you this message, to emphasize the things your parents and grandparents have tried to instill in you. As they did, I see you developing into a fine young lady.
- You learn more by listening. In other words, listen more and talk less.
- Don’t forget good manners, such as “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, and “may I”.
- Think for yourself. You have a good mind. Keep your mind and body clean.
- As your Grandmother used to say, “Pretty is as pretty does”.
- Think twice before you speak. Put yourself in the place of the person you are speaking to. See how you would feel if that was said to you.
- Finally, read, Luke 6:24-38, remember that God promises to be with you always. Knowing this I am sure you will do great things, and others will love and respect you for yourself.
