President Johnson joins leaders from civil rights, education, health, tech, and entertainment industries to foster greater investment and collaboration between U.S. and Qatar
Baltimore, MD (April 3, 2018) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), America’s premier civil rights organization, participated in the recent U.S. Trade Mission to Qatar, organized by the U.S.-Qatar Business Council, a U.S.-based non-profit trade association and the premier vehicle for enhancing bilateral trade and investment between the U.S. and Qatar.
During the five days of meetings, NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson and a diverse group of public and private sector organizations met with Qatari business leaders and government agencies to learn about the growth of U.S.-Qatar business relationships as well as new opportunities for collaboration.
“Improving economic success, sustainability, and financial security for African Americans runs at the core of the NAACP’s mission,” said President Johnson. “We are eager to be a part of emerging opportunities to improve the economic well-being of communities of color in the United States. Participating in the US-Qatar Business Council’s trade mission, alongside many of our country’s top African-American politicians and business leaders, was an important platform for exploring such opportunities and forging new connections across industries and borders. Qatar is a promising setting for such partnerships, and I am grateful to QABC for the opportunity to participate in this mission.”
Delegation participants included top African-American leaders in real estate development, venture capital, private equity, and entertainment. The delegation met with Qatar’s Minister of Economy and Commerce, the Ministry of Finance, the Qatar Business Chamber, the Qatar Development Bank, QIA, and the Qatar Foundation, which has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to American communities in need, such as New Orleans and cities in Texas after recent natural disasters.
