BALTIMORE (November 5, 2019) – On November 4, President Trump announced the US will withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord. The nation’s leading civil rights organization issued the following statement:
“President Trump’s Decision to withdraw from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord further proves the impact that climate change has on our planet continues to be undermined. The policies Trump has pursued since first coming into office in 2017 have been counter to the goals of the Paris Agreement. He repealed a Clean Power Plan, and replaced it with new regulations that could increase emissions. He has also weakened fuel economy standards which will raise emissions. His administration is trying to revoke an act which allows states to set air quality standards that are more demanding than federal rules.
The earth’s climate is now changing faster and more extremely than at any point in the history of modern civilization, primarily as a result of human activities. As the effects of climate change intensify, so too will the stark differences in income, race, ethnicity, gender, and other defining differences. Low income Americans and racial and ethnic minorities have fewer resources with which they can prepare for, defend against, or use to clean up after a disaster which is why we need to pass H.R. 9, the “Climate Action Now Act.” We need to take decisive action to address this increasing problem while we still can. It is not an understatement to say that our future depends upon it.”
