Baltimore, MD (MAY 8, 2018) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) grieves the passing of Minnie Mabry Hill, long-term NAACP leader in San Antonio, who died Friday at the age of 74.
“The NAACP extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Oliver Hill, NAACP San Antonio Branch President and Minnie’s husband, and their entire family,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. “Ms. Hill was a determined and compassionate public servant, and she will be sorely missed by the San Antonio community and national NAACP family. The day before her passing, local and national NAACP leaders celebrated Ms. Hill with a standing ovation for bringing our 109th annual convention to San Antonio this July. Although Minnie was unable to attend due to her failing health, the crowd did not miss the opportunity to honor her enormous contributions. I stand with them, with great respect and gratitude for Ms. Hill.”
“Thanks in large part to Minnie’s leadership, the San Antonio Branch is one of the most active and engaged in the nation,” said Leon W. Russell, Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors. “We are deeply disappointed that she will not have the opportunity to witness the NAACP national convention come to San Antonio this summer, or the branch’s 100th anniversary. Her absence will force us to rise to the occasion, honoring her legacy with a unifying, energizing convention. As I said during our visit to San Antonio last week, let’s do this for Minnie.”
