BALTIMORE (October 17, 2018) – NAACP will host a national tele townhall on Thursday, October 18th at 9 pm as it rallies to turnout Black voters for the midterm elections. With less than three weeks until election day, this townhall – the second in a series of GOTV calls – will focus on two critical issues facing the Black community as they cast their votes on November 6: Education and Economy.
Panelists:
- Derrick Johnson, President and CEO, NAACP
- Marvin Owens, Sr. Director for Economic Programs
- Michael A. Curry, Esq., NAACP National Board Member
- L. Joy Williams, President NAACP Brooklyn Branch
- Cordy Davis, NAACP Civic Engagement Manager
Thousands of listeners may participate in the call which will pull from themes expressed in NAACP’s poll about voter attitudes. NAACP’s campaign slogan for the 2018 midterm elections is Vote! Our Lives Depend On It, and the conversation on the call will focus on why lives depend on the vote.
“It has always been a priority for the NAACP, that African-Americans have access to quality education and economic prosperity that they can thrive in,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. “However, we must use our voting power to elect leaders that will help put these building blocks in place and ensure our future stake in this country.”
“We want to galvanize voters with the messages they hear from our featured speakers as they tap into their relational organizing power and spread the message to their own networks,” said Jamal Watkins, NAACP Vice President of Civic Engagement.
