Detroit — On June 8, 2019 the NAACP brought together hundreds of volunteers for a rally and training in preparation for its 110th Annual Convention in Detroit, July 20-24.
The Focus H.O.P.E. Center in Detroit hosted enthusiastic volunteers from all over the city who learned the Do’s and Don’ts for volunteering at convention. Volunteers were trained on everything from assisting attendees at convention and navigating the venue to the convention schedule and major events.
Detroit native Steele Hughes came out to volunteer after attending his regional NAACP conference last month. “I met a lot of positive people eager to make change in our community. I’m especially excited to see what our youth are capable of and hear their ideas at this year’s convention.”
Recent college graduate, Jermaine, said he is eager to attend as this will be his first time coming to convention. “I want to learn, grow, develop and I know the NAACP convention will give me the opportunity to do all that while networking and meeting people with similar interests as me.”
The NAACP is expecting between 8,000-10,000 visitors in Detroit next month. Over five days, the NAACP will hold hundreds of events at the Cobo Center on the waterfront, ranging from policy discussions on the latest political issues, a CEO Roundtable, Presidential Candidates Forum, the NAACP ACT-SO (Academic, Cultural, Technical and Scientific Olympics) final competition and numerous panels and workshops on education and health issues.
