Civil Rights Leader to Visit Several Churches in Orlando During First Sunday to Mobilize Black Voters
ORLANDO (November 2, 2018)—In the race toward a groundbreaking midterm election which could determine the fate of Florida and the nation for years to come, the leader of the nation’s foremost civil rights organization will travel to Orlando to partner with local churches and NAACP branches to get out the vote. Among African-Americans, the First Sunday of the month is significant and normally draws more members of the congregation. The NAACP looks to utilize First Sunday as a way to mobilize voters two days before the polls. “It’s important that the two leading institutions in the Black community be among the vanguard in mobilizing our folks to vote,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson. “It’s about ending the idea that our community can be disrespected, our votes suppressed or decisions made about our community without our input. We’re here to end that notion. “
