BALTIMORE (August 28, 2018)—The nation’s leading civil rights organization is denouncing a recent parody which depicts several Civil Rights leaders in a vulgar and inappropriate manner.
“As we commemorate the March on Washington, we must remain vigilant in educating those who may not understand the impact the leading women of the Civil Rights Movement had on our community,” said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. “Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz left a legacy that should be honored, not mocked.”
Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz championed human rights and social justice and remained steadfast in their fight for freedom throughout their lives.
During the Civil Rights Movement, millions marched, boycotted, and endured unyielding violence to bring awareness to our collective struggle. Heroic martyrs including men, women and children like Emmitt Till, whose murder we remember today, lost their lives in the name of freedom and justice. Their sacrifice and the legacy of our leaders demand our fullest reverence on this day and every day.
