Actress, producer, political activist, and NAACP Image Award winner, Rosario Dawson, is calling on us to join her and the NAACP’s Environmental and Climate Justice program in advancing the solar revolution so that we can “take back our power!”
The fossil fuel industry puts tremendous health, economic, and social burdens on communities of color. While at Into Action, Rosario promoted our Solar Equity Initiative and asserted that “we need intersectional intervention to change the systems of oppression and the power held by individuals and corporations who oppress through interconnected injustices – and, fortunately, the resistance is rising.”
In conjunction with honoring the civil rights legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., on January 13, 2018, the NAACP, along with GRID Alternatives, Vote Solar, Sunrun, SEIA, United Methodist Women, and other partners, launched a year-long Solar Equity Initiative. The goal of this initiative is to advance communities’ of color leadership in the clean energy economy by:
- providing solar job skills training to 100 individuals,
- installing solar panels on 20 households and 10 community centers, and
- strengthening equity in solar access policies in at least 5 states across the country.
The initiative kicked off with a solar installation and training project at Jenesse Center, Inc., a domestic violence prevention and intervention organization that provides life-saving support to their clients in Los Angeles, California.
“By going solar, we support communities of color to join and lead the solar revolution,” says Rosario.
