Led by Tiffany Dena Loftin, former SGA president at University of California, Santa Cruz, over 20 students attended the NAACP Annual Board Meeting in New York City, February 14-16, 2019.
Our NAACP Youth were heavily involved and took part in conversations including youth engagement in local issues and training for college and youth units. On Friday, the National Youth Works Committee (NYWC) and the 7 youth board members met for over 4 hours to discuss how the Youth and College Division can improve and be more involved with the NAACP.
Led by Traelon Rogers, student at Dillard University, youth members came up with ideas to improve their communication and build on their current successes. Helen Meyers, student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, led the discussion on this year’s convention in Detroit and what events and activities will draw in youth participation. Convention Chair Michael Turner stopped by the meeting to address members’ questions on representation at the convention. Turner also announced that DeJoiry McKenzie-Simmons, Vice Chair of the NYWC and Howard University student will be serve as Presiding Officer for one day at the convention.
Our national field organizer, Derrick Lewis, gave a great presentation to our National Board of Directors where he examined the expanding structure of the Youth and College Division. Lewis highlighted the division’s accomplishments in 2018 and what they have in store for 2019.
