Group to Gather Final Feedback from Members and Partners on Retooling in the Trump Era
WASHINGTON D.C. (November 29, 2017) – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will conclude its seven-city listening tour, NAACP Forward: Today, Tomorrow & Always, on Monday, December 4th in Washington, D.C. NAACP National Chairman, Leon Russell; President and CEO, Derrick Johnson; and DC Branch President Akosua Ali will participate in this final town hall session.
“The tour has been a powerful experience for NAACP leadership and its members across the nation,” said NAACP Chairman Leon W. Russell. “We look forward to transforming our feedback into our overall strategy for fulfilling our role as the nation’s foremost protector of civil rights.”
NAACP Forward is part of the organization’s strategic plan to enhance its vision and mission, and to renew its commitment to the fight for civil rights amid a swirling climate of political hostility, voter suppression, income inequality, mass incarceration, police brutality and anti-immigrant sentiment. NAACP Forward will convene local membership, supporters and partners to offer their guidance on how the NAACP can retool itself to combat 21st century threats.
During past few months, NAACP national leadership has toured cities and towns across the country including Detroit, Niagara Falls, Los Angeles, Nashville, Des Moines and San Antonio. Most stops on the tour were integrated into ongoing state conferences and each city represented a site within the NAACP’s seven regions. The tour will conclude in Washington D.C., and the NAACP will begin to coordinate the input gained from hundreds of supporters into a vehicle to fuel their strategic plan for moving forward.
“What we’ve seen is that I firmly believe that this Tour will expand our reach, touch our people, engage more diverse audiences and reinforce our focus on civil rights in this age of great political and social uncertainty,” stated Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO. “The national Listening Tour, NAACP Forward, is a critical step in looking ahead, and achieving our objectives.”
The Association launched NAACP Forward, during this year’s 108th annual convention in Baltimore.
