“Blacks destroy school systems and schools,” read one letter to county officials about the busing plan. “Black families (as a core group) don’t value education like other cultural groups,” read another. “The Black Community needs to take responsibility for the behavior of its people,” a third declared, “or the white man will take them back to place where they don’t want to go.” Don’t worry, though. The writer insisted they were not being racist.

Despite the takeover by #MeToo of social media, and subsequently popular culture, these past two years, its recognition was over ten years in the making. Civil rights activist Tarana Burke first coined the term in 2006 on MySpace as a way to connect sexual assault survivors to the appropriate resources, according to the New York Times, but it was belatedly amplified in October 2017 following the accusations of sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein and Alyssa Milano’s call to action on Twitter.
Black Voices – HuffPost: California Takes New Steps To Stop Black Women From Dying In Childbirth
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday aiming to address the issue of Black women dying in childbirth at disproportionately high rates compared to their white peers. The legislation, authored by California state Sen. Holly Mitchell (D), will require hospitals and clinics in the state to implement implicit bias training for all health care providers working in perinatal services. Sponsored by NARAL, Black Women for Wellness and other groups, the bill also requires the state’s health department to track and publish additional data around pregnancy-related deaths in an effort to better understand the issue.

Rihanna set the record straight regarding her relationship with the NFL and reports she turned down the Super Bowl in support of Colin Kaepernick. Last October, reports surfaced that the mogul refuted the NFL’s request to perform at Super Bowl LIII as Blavity previously reported. In a recent interview with Vogue, the “What’s My Name” singer confirmed she did indeed turn down the halftime gig in support of the former San Francisco 49ers player.
The Crisis: My Brother, Botham Jean
Just another normal day. I sent Botham an article via text titled, “Florida man accidentally burns home down after lighting Nike shoes on fire in protest of Nike’s Colin Kaepernick ad.” Minutes later, a red heart showed up at the top indicating he loved the article. I smiled and went on with my day. I didn’t know this was going to be the last text exchange I would have with my baby brother.
