The NAACP’s 110th National Convention tackled the most pressing issues we face as a nation. From Black women in electoral politics, immigration reform, LGBTQ issues, and humane immigration resolutions, the 110th convention served as a breeding ground for answers to the dire political landscape.
This year’s theme, “When We Fight, We Win” brought attention to the hard-fought victories that helped people of color overcome, but more importantly, highlighted what the fight looks like as the nation moves into 2020.
Speakers included:
- Stacey Abrams, former minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives;
- David Johns, executive director of NBJC,
- Ambassador Patrick Gaspard, president of the Open Society Foundations;
- Tiffany D. Loftin, director of the NAACP Youth & College Division;
- Michael Bloomberg, American businessman, politician, author, and philanthropist;
- Rep. Val Demings, FL-10th District
- Rep. Al Green, D-TX 9th District
- Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-OH 11th District
- Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-MS 2nd District
- Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-MI 13th District
- Rev. Jesse Jackson, American civil rights activist, Baptist minister, and politician
- Wade Henderson, president, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights
Most notably, a vote was taken to support impeachment proceedings against the current sitting president of the United States.
“The pattern of President Trump’s misconduct is unmistakable and has proven time and time again, that he is unfit to serve as the president of this country, said Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of NAACP. “From his attempts to curtail the scope of Robert Mueller’s investigation to calling out minority congresswomen and telling them to go back to their countries, to caging immigrant children without food or water to his numerous attempts to avert the Supreme Court’s decision to not add in the citizenship question to the 2020 Census – this president has led one of the most racist and xenophobic administrations since the Jim Crow era. President Trump is not above the law and the crimes that he has committed and he must be prosecuted. We will make sure that the NAACP is at the forefront of pushing Congress to proceed with the impeachment process.”
The week-long convention concluded with ten presidential candidates that accepted the invitation to address the NAACP and bring to the forefront their plans to address income inequality, immigration, racial disparities, economic insecurities, healthcare and the growing threat of foreign interference. Attendees heard from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden, and Bill Welds.
As 2020 swiftly approaches, the NAACP has committed to course-correcting the ills we have witnessed at the hands of this administration and current president. The NAACP will work with community partners to fight back the tyrannical policies imposed by President Trump.
