This #BlackHistoryMonth NBC BLK recognized 10 women shaping their environment and altering the lives of those in their communities. Our Youth and College Director, Tiffany Dena Loftin, was recognized for using her voice and talent to make sure young black people’s lives matter.
Loftin has been raising her voice since she was an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Cruz and hasn’t missed a beat since. From securing financial aid for students of color to going viral at the 2018 March for Our Lives, Loftin uses her experience and passion to show that the power of the people is greater than the people in power.
In our current political climate, where innocent, gay, black men and women are assaulted, black inmates are forced to live without power or heat for days at a time, and governors are found in pictures wearing black face, it is essential that people like Loftin are here to organize the voices of young, black people and lead by example.
Loftin spoke on the controversy surrounding Ralph Northam saying, “People should be held accountable for all the decisions that they choose to make – whether they are students in college, medical school or otherwise. Elected officials especially should be held to a higher standard because they represent and serve all of all communities.”
Racism of any form is not and should not be allowed. This act shows Northam‘s lack of awareness and is why the NAACP has called for his resignation. “Black face in any manner is always racist and never okay. No matter the party affiliation, we can not stand for such behavior.”
